Utility Trailer

After we purchased the Teryx4 to play with, we needed a trailer to haul it on. I have been looking around at a few here and there and checking Craigs List every day. Every trailer(used) that I found was priced way to high, or was already trashed beyond repair. I had just about decided to buy a new one till yesterday. I was driving down 51 south out of Decatur and saw one on the side of the road. At first glance, at 55 mph, it looked pretty bad and the sign said $1000. You can purchase a brand new one in the Metro Mess for $1200-1500. On the way back by I stopped and looked a little closer. It had brand new tires, the wood on the deck was still good, but it didn't have any paint. Someone had stripped it for painting and never got around to painting it and rust was all over it. Not the deep, through the metal rust, or pitted rust, just stained with rust. It didn't have a dent in it and the jack worked amazingly enough. It had new safety chains, but the lights were the old type round steel lights, and the wiring was somewhat lacking. I called W-spouse and got the OK from her to make the guy an offer. I offered him $900 cash and he accepted it. I hooked it up and brought it home, but not before stopping by and buying a new set of tail lights and wiring. When I got home I installed the lights and ran the new wiring. This afternoon I started sanding and grinding and applying primer.

The Chevy hub caps have gotta go!

You can see the rust stain in this close up.

A little Rustoleum rust neutralizing primer...no problem.

Although, if it were me...I'd probably only do that after I'd run a 7" cup brush over it pretty well.

Saw an older model 2 horse trailer on the highway yesterday that made me smile - all the wheels had Cadillac hubcaps on them - the kind from the '60s or '70s that I remember on my folks' Fleetwoods.
