Question Of The Day

Do you think there is programming on TV that is corrupting our society, or has the ability to change our society(good or bad) as we know it today?

mass media only gives us what information that leads us all in the general direction "they" want the country to go... programming perpetuates stereotypes, prejudice, bigotry, gluttony, selfishness, and the need for instant gratification.

now i do realize there are some good programs out there... but there are not so good ones, and the commercials in between are unreal... sitting and watching, or listening to the garbage for too long and the junk starts to permeate our minds without us even realizing it! explains how people will just blurt out some line to a jingle from a show or ad that they can't recall watching...

brainwashing!! dang federales!

p.s. i had a friend who was a conspiracy theorist... he believed that the govt was putting additives into canned foods that made our brains more susceptible to the subliminal messages we were being exposed to through watching TV and listening to radio both controlled by the got... ha! he used to crack me up... and he truly believed this junk

While everybody has the choice of what to watch, there is no question that TV has changed and is currently changing our society.

Another huge factor is the expansion of the social media. Communication (texts, face book, tweets, blogs, etc.) is drastically being altered. The younger generation is being insulated from face to face contact. I, personally, don't think that this good.

When I go home for the holiday's to visit family they are big television fanatics, while I don't even own a TV. I notice when the tv is on that you have to compete with it when talking or visiting. Their eye's are always drawn to the pretty pictures.

It just seems to me that we use it to escape (which isn't always bad), but it can be abused.

I also notice with my 3 year old that this a difference in their "play" and interactions. Between the kids who are TV watchers and those that are not. Who is right and who is wrong is not for me to decide.

But Television has definitely changed our society and I believe as the programs change, so do the focus of the public.

" Garbage in, garbage out," was an expression long before the computer age.
The harm TV programming does far outweighs the good. We have become a nation of voyeurs.
NASCAR and "Dangerous Catch" are ok, though; and WWE, if you turn off the sound. : )>

I do not watch tv, and really didn't allow my girls to watch it too very often, or for too long. But I still see, just in my own two, the difference in their view and expectations of life because of shows they watched as they got older. Real life isn't like My Super Sweet 16, etc. It pained me to see/hear some of their attitudes about things, like I had failed them in some aspect. Not by NOT giving them the dream life they saw on tv, but for failing to pound into their heads that thats all it was, pretend. I thought I was being very diligent in monitoring them and talking about reality vs tv/media. Some small things proved otherwise, and I hated that.

Thank God the real world has taught it's lessons, and we are past all of that, for the most part.

So, yes. I believe media of any kind has the ability to warp our sense of reality and vision.....

TV, internet, x-Box, game boys..It is all amazing techonolgy, but I think parents should pay more attention to what kind of things their children and especially teens are watching and playing..We have TV's in every room, but we have rules, that school work comes first..We also make sure we have some outside time and that the kids stay active with sports and stuff..I really think their is a happy medium..

Uh, yeah! There's not much on TV that I consider worth watching (to be honest, I only have broadcast): Nova, Motor Week, The Mentalist, NCIS, CSI - I can't think of a sitcom that I enjoy watching anymore.

If I had cable/dish, would probably watch: Mythbusters, How It's Made, Dirty Jobs, and some History and NatGeo programs.

Yes, to keep the interest of people shows have been trying to out do each other weither it be with violence, sexually, funny, sad or any thing else that can get emotion from us. We see it so much in our homes now that it has become acceptable in society.
