Question Of The Day

With the fast paced lives that so many of us lead, and we don't always have time and/or make time to cook. Is it possible to eat healthy if the majority of our meals are fast food?

Eat healthy? Or make better choices??? If you are watching sugars (like I know you and my hubby need to do) then buns on chicken sandwiches have sugars and carbs, salad dressings are horrible with sugars. Many things that sound healthy really are not low calorie. BUT, when we have to eat on the run, we know the things that are the worse for us. (which includes that Whopper you love) ;-) Take things from home that are better for you. Hubby has some of the very low sugar snack type bars handy when he can't get away, and needs SOMETHING to eat.

"buns on chicken sandwiches have sugars and carbs, salad dressings are horrible with sugars....Amen to that Trigger.....my Dad is diabetic and since we have to watch his sugar intake, I've become astounded at all the sugar in everything, even if it's not fast food. I've taken to making as many things as I can from scratch just so I can control the sugar......I'm getting pretty good at tomato sauce now.

Meat without bun helps but it's tough.

Due to all the added salt, sugar, preservatives, fat, lack of fiber and limited fruits and vegetables it is not possible to eat a healthful diet if the majority of a person's diet is comprised of fast food.

If you have to eat on the run, make certain to always have with you a bite or two of cheese/peanut butter and an orange/apple or grapes for a snack, low sugar/carb protein bars, low sugar/carb jerky and/or a package of water packed tuna. If you cannot stomach dry tuna, sprinkle some olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the tuna.

It takes absolutely no more time to run into a grocery store and purchase a head of lettuce, container of grape tomatoes, bunch of scallions, sliced mushrooms and a handful of pine nuts than it does to sit in a line at a drive thru, during lunch hour. Make certain to always have with you a large bottle of water to rinse off the veggies and your own mixture of olive oil and GOOD balsamic vinegar to sprinkle on your salad. I also enjoy sprinkling a smidge of Canadian Steak Seasoning. It also helps to have a collapsable bowl and a bunch of disposable sporks on hand. Just a suggestion, save enough water to rinse out your bowl.

I do not eat fast food and have since birth suffered from mild non-diabetic hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia and have always had to have regular healthful meals that have the appropriate combination of carbs and protein. NOTHING at a fast food restaurant meets my dietetic needs.

Remember, to prevent an insulin spike, you need to always have a touch of protein when you eat carbs.

You are an adult and responsible for your health. You know you will have to eat while away from home, there is no reason for you to not have healthful food with you to help maintain your health.

Ditto that -- taking food on the run. I've learned that the best way to combat a growling tummy on the road is to have something decent to stick into it! There's nothing healthy about fast food.

hubby says raw unsalted nuts and avocados.

mzchief, I admire your organizational skills. Everything you say is true but short of Around The Corner and I hanging out with you, I don't think either one of us can complete your regimen. Not to mention that we did hang out with you, you would probably run screaming into the night in about 15 minutes. lol

Thank you but it is no great feat. Seriously, it is easy. I leave a bag in my car that has jerky, healthful protein bars, zip bag of mixed nuts, pine nuts, pouch of tuna, a combo of extra, extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar in a recycled sprinkle spout Worcestershire sauce bottle, a shaker of Canadian Steak Seasoning, a stash of disposable sporks/forks/knives, a sharp knife and my collapsible bowl and a liter of water. It really is easy to keep my food tote stocked because I always restock an item immediate after I use it.

I always have a couple pieces of Jolly Rancher Fire Candy and packets of raw sugar, in my purse, for when I screw up and the hypoglycemia hits hard.

Trust me, I would drive you and W bonkers long before you would bother me. The only people who truly annoy me are stupid people.
