Question Of The Day

Do you think the photos and videos need to be released of Osama Bin Laden.

I do for various reasons. I do understand that their may be repercussions because of it, but I still feel it is the right thing to do.

America loves gore. We'll clamor for the photo's release then be horrified as how gruesome it is. We'll condemn the military for shooting people in the head instead of in the chest and insist that new "kinder and gentler" assassination techniques be taught to our special forces.

"Kill them all, but do it humanely."

It's all glamorous until you actually see a head blown out by a 5.56 round then your perception changes a bit. Counter-terrorism is a nasty business best left to the professionals like the Navy SEALS, CIA para military or Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance. We don't need to know what they do or how they do it. Let's just be glad the tyrant is dead and move on. Let's just be thankful that we have these individuals on our side that are willing to do things we couldn't stomach and see horrors we never hope to see.

"That's all I'm gonna say about that."

Too many people still have doubts, so yes. BUT, even then they could have doubts because photoshop is to easy to create such photos

While I will always support our government, because I am an American and always want to believe the best in them, I do not trust them and am sickened by the self serving way they do business. This is NOT the country that was founded and intended.

When it was announced that he was dead and the body was on it's way to the States, the first thing out of my mouth was "We will never see that body here" and, for whatever reason, I was right.

I'm just saying, whatever our government wants the people to believe, they will make it happen.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist or any kind of radical. I'm not anything.

I guess what I'm saying is, I have always, and will always take anything and everything our government says with an attitude of "Well, if you say so, Chief".

That's all I've got on that.

Not that anyone cares about my opinion. We all know about opinions, hehe.

No, it's not necessary. I'll just take their word for it. Jar is exactly right, people only want to see it for the gore not to see if it really is him.

I hate to say it but it's harder and harder to trust our Gov so I'd say yes just for prove. But as txtrigger pointed out photo shop can be done also. Point is Cuz doesn't matter if he is or not it isn't gonna make a difference to our friends and family fighting over there. Just Saying

The more opinions that I hear about it, the more I tend to lean towards "No". I agree with your stand on the gore aspect Jar, but I still wonder about the validity of the argument without the actual proof. That's my only doubt.
Then we could say, "Well how do we know that is actually him in the picture".

I am torn on the issue, but thanks for the continued input on the question.

Conspiracy theories will abound, picture or no [looks like a "no."]

Chances are you wouldn't be able to recognize him from the picture anyway. A 5.56 round [if, in fact, that's what was used. Special forces may have gone to the more potent 6.8mm round in recent years, in which case the head would be nothing more than a mouth and that grizzly beard on his chin] deflates a human head like a balloon so that most mothers wouldn't recognize their sons. It's a nasty little .22.

Trust me. You probably don't want to see it, even if it's only to give you "comfort" that he's actually dead.

I think the President made the right decision by not releasing the photo. Yes, you read that correctly. If the dude is not really dead than he'll [Bin Laden] be the first to let you know, I promise.

After initially positing, on my blog, that methaphorically hoisting the head on a pike was not necessary because it's no longer the 12th century, I am moving in the direction of at least releasing some image of the departed OBL.

Not so much in an act of celebration, though I believe we have the right to if we wish;

and not to prove that he's dead (for the already mentioned reasons that anything can be photoshopped these days).

I think that it's important for us to maintain a link to reality - the reality in this case being that OBL was required to pay the price for his wickedness. Not a sanitized version that 'he was eliminated', but a truthful view of the dead OBL, to underscore the point.

As one who believes that some crimes are so heinous (as OBL's were) that only death will suffice as punishment, my view is that it's our solemn duty to make the viewing available, not in circus fashion, but to provide a visceral connection to the reality of the situation.
